WHO WE ARE

Montana Backcountry Outfitters is a well-established outfitting business based in Libby, a small community nestled in the scenic mountains of beautiful northwest Montana. Even though Libby is centered about ninety miles away from the nearest city, it does not exactly qualify as an "off the beaten path" location as it is renowned for being the ideal gateway to the vast wilderness and outdoor recreation that Montana is noted for.

As a young man, your guide Roby Bowe, grew to love and appreciate what the Montana wilderness has to offer - an extreme sense of renewal, relaxation, and solitude. His desire to bring awareness to those who would otherwise be strangers to this great masterpiece of nature inspired him to form the Montana Backcountry Outfitters. To be able to be in the unique position to encourage American sportsmen to recognize the value and benefit of this magnificent state and to actively continue the traditions of sportsmanship, outfitting became a way of life for him.

Roby Bowe, a Libby native, has been hiking, hunting and enjoying the great outdoors since childhood earning the well suited title of being an avid outdoorsman. Upon high school graduation, Roby departed from his adventurous youth of exploring the wilderness to begin his higher education in pursuit of a career in law enforcement. After completing over thirty years of service, Roby retired from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the David Thompson Search & Rescue in 2019 to resume to his outfitting business on a full-time basis.

Roby, applying his extensive experience as a guide in the backcountry coupled with his strong background in wilderness rescue and his first-class horsemanship and packing skills, will certainly deliver safe, successful Montana hunting vacations unique to each and every one of his clients.

We Take Campfire Cooking to a Whole Other Level

While ditching the microwave and the George Foreman Grill is part of the outdoor experience, freeze–dried pouches of powder and instant meals–on–the–go are no match for Roby’s culinary skills in the camp kitchen! Along with the inviting aroma of fresh cowboy coffee brewing over the open fire, Roby will emerge with a feast serving up some down–home delicious, all–you–can–eat meals with all the trimmings complimented by an occasional homemade dessert. From the heartiest of breakfasts to the main meals of the day, each consisting of the choicest cuts of beef, the freshest vegetables, the most scrumptious fish, and home-made style stews and casseroles – you might be lucky enough to go home without packing on a few extra pounds yourself.

"I’d like to thank Roby and his team for an experience of a lifetime. Since the first time I came to Montana, I’ve always wanted to hunt "The Bob". In September, I got the opportunity to venture into some of the wildest, most beautiful country I’ve ever seen. Anyone can pay money to shoot an elk on a game farm. But, it’s not every day you get a chance to actually hunt for elk in terrain this varied, breathtaking and remote. I felt like I was in the middle of Glacier National Park except there were no roads and no people. Roby and his team were knowledgeable and thought of everything. His mules and horses made the long ride to camp an enjoyable and memorable experience, the food was incredible and Roby might just make the best cup of coffee west of the Mississippi. If you’re looking for a real deal, back country big game experience, you won’t be disappointed."

"In September 2010, my son and I booked an elk and mule deer hunt into the Bob Marshall Wilderness with Montana Backcountry Outfitters. It was an experience of a lifetime. The scenery in the Bob Marshall is outstanding. The base camp was well-organized and comfortable with plenty of good food. The horses and mules were very dependable and sure footed. The guides were outstanding. They were very knowledgeable of the area, eager, and willing to do their best to give us a quality trip. We came home with a 5 x 6 bull elk and a 4-point mule deer. It was a trip of a lifetime, and I would be more than happy to book another trip with Montana Backcountry Outfitters."

"This was one of the best hunts I have ever been on. While it was a lot of physical effort the experience, hunt, and surroundings were worth it. The accommodations were excellent as well as the food. Well worth the price and an experience like no other."

"I would like to thank you for the 10-day trip into the Bob. You have a great camp set up with a spectacular view of Lone Butte right out of the tent, where we saw goats on several occasions. The horses and mules were gentle even for a novice rider. The food was hot and plenty of it, but best of all the guides were friendly and helpful throughout the entire hunt. Although I didn’t get an elk on this trip, I had my opportunities. We had a great time and I plan to come back as soon as possible. If anyone wants more information send them my way. Thanks again."
