HUNTING TRIP CHECKLIST
Prepare for Your Montana Wilderness Adventure
The following is a convenient checklist to help you plan for your next guided hunting trip with the Montana Backcountry Outfitters. With our guided trips, you are required to supply your own hunting gear, efficient clothing, and personal items. All other necessities will be provided for you.

As we are asked a great many questions about hunting in the Montana wilderness, one of the most common inquiries we get is regarding the gear we choose. Basing our opinion upon experience, we highly recommend that you visit the KUIU website and check out their high-performance hunting gear, apparel, equipment, and tech - all designed to withstand the most challenging conditions.
Underclothes for Layering
- Long underwear (regular or insulated)
- Wool socks (moisture-wicking wool socks are best)
- Long sleeve t-shirts or lightweight shirts (preferably with pockets)
- Insulated jacket or vest (goose down insulation provides maximum warmth with minimal weight and bulk)
Camouflage Clothing
- Cargo pants (fleece or wool, waterproof and windproof GORE-TEX WINDSTOPPER garments, preferably with many pockets)
- Hats (one warm fleece stocking cap and one fitted baseball-type hat)
- Gloves (one light pair, one heavy pair, wool, waterproof)
- Outer coat (heavy, wool, cotton, waterproof)
- Rain gear, parka, or shell to cover all outer layers (nylon or rubber, waterproof, not water-repellent or water-resistant)
- Comfortable pair of slip-on camp boots or shoes
- Hunting boots with good tread (waterproof, insulated, GORE-TEX footwear, 600-800 gram, 8" - 10" high, leather is best)
- Hiking boots with good tread (light, waterproof, insulated, GORE-TEX footwear, 200-400 gram, 6" - 8" high)
- Waterproof, breathable high gaiters (also known as alpine or expedition gaiters)
Personal Items
- Orange vest
- Sleeping bag (down is lighter and warmer than synthetic, pack in a waterproof stuff sack)
- Toiletry items
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- Prescription glasses or contact lens kit
- Prescription medications
- Lip balm
- Wash cloth
- Hand towel
- Unscented baby wipes
- Moleskin
- Insect repellent lotion (seasonal)
- Lighter
- Hunting knife or pocket tool

- Fire starting kit

- Camera and extra batteries
- Travel alarm clock

- Binoculars (8 power is sufficient, 10 power is best)
- Rangefinder binoculars (optional)

- Flashlight or headlamp and extra batteries
- Small pack, backpack, or fanny pack
- High protein snacks (optional)
